《地下の筆跡》2019
アスファルトやコンクリートに覆われている道が、配管工事などで大きく掘り返されていると、つい見入ってしまう。普段気にすることのない足下には、インフラ設備を始め、過去の遺物や化石など、さまざまなものが埋まっているのだ。日本に暮らす人々をたびたび脅かす地震も、地下深くにあるプレート同士の干渉によって引き起こされている。それらのことからは、目には見えなくとも、歴史的、生活的に私たちと通じているものが、日夜足下で蠢いているような想像が膨らんでいく。東京のような見渡す限りのコンクリートジャングルでは、なおのことだ。
本作は、東京の都市景観を写したフィルムを、現像後に撮影地の僅かに露出した土に埋めて腐食させ、プリントしたものである。アスファルトやコンクリートを引き剥がし、その下に埋まっているものたちと、コミュニケーションを取るような表現を模索した結果、以上のような方法論に至った。また、埋めているフィルムは、4×5（シノゴ）と呼ばれるハガキに近いシート状のもので、像が腐食によって消えていくのを待つ制作過程が、返信ハガキでのやり取りのようであることや、予期できない腐食の現れ方を、相手からの返答に見立て、「地下の筆跡」とした。
